ROVER 6 hp

Tests and Reports

1905 - 1912

In the second catalogue of ROVER the 6 hp appears next to the 8 hp for the first time. After the car was on display at the Birmingham Motor Show in January 1905, reports are accumulating, especially as numerous sporting successes had already been achieved before the show. Thus the catalog quotes not without pride "a few press releases to the 6 hp Rover Car".

The Autocar
„This entirely new design of 6 h.p. two-seated car is on very similar lines to the 8 h.p. car. It has evidently been well designed and contains some interesting features.“
„The engine is the first thing which attracts the attention of the mechanically minded. The cylinder is water-cooled, with mechanically operated valves disposed on the left side of the cylinder. The bore is 95 mm, stroke 110 mm, and the normal speed is 1,200 revolutions per minute.“

The Car
„Not content with having made the 8 h.p. car a success, the Rover Company have now brought out a 6 h.p. model at the extraordinary price of 100 guineas. The whole of the parts are readily accessible; in fact the whole of of the transmission from the piston to the tail-shaft can be taken out by undoing eight nuts, a desideratum which has probably never been accomplished in any other car. Cheap as is the 6 h.p. vehicle, there is nothing shoddy in its construction, and the firm will guarantee it to perform with satisfaction.“

The Motor
„Very remarkable value for 100 guineas; indeed, it is common wonderment how the car can be turned out at the price. For a hundred guineas it is hard to conceive how it can be improved upon. The body is splendidly finished and exceptionally roomy, while a very special feature is the entire enclosing of the driving mechanism.“

The Motor Car Journal
„The vehicle, which can attain a speed of twenty-four miles per hour, is attracting considerable attention, and seems likely to becomme a popular type, particularly in view of its relatively low price.“

Country Life
„Another very interesting car is the 6 h.p. Rover, at the extraordinary price of 100 guineas. The 8 h.p. is already credited with doing forty miles to the gallon, the ‚Lewis‘ carburetter being particularly economical, so that the smaller car should be still more remarkable in this respect.“

The Cyclist Trade Review
„The bestr attempt to turn out a car at 100 guineas which we have seen. Mr. Lewis, its designer, is indeed to be congratulated.“

Scottish Cyclist
„The latest departure of the Rover Cycle Co. is one that should meet with the approval - and the support - of that large section of the public who have been waiting for a motor car obtainable at somewhere in the neighbourhood of a hundred pounds. The best work of the Rover factory has been put into it, and that this is really saying a great deal in a few words will be readily granted by anyone who has ridden a Rover bicycle.“

Cycling
„One of the handiest motor vehicles on the market to-day is the 6 h.p. Rover Light Car, which comes out about as low in price as anything in the motor-car line. For those who want a light and reliable vehicle for runabout purposes and pleasure touring, this car can be recommended, and especially for ladies who are taking up the sport. Though cheap, there is nothing of the ‚made in Germany‘ about the car, either in appearance or fact; indeed, we believe that every part of it is made at the Rover Works in Coventry.“

Sport and Play
„The firm’s name is sufficient guarantee for the excellence of the car.“

The Hardwareman
„Exceedingly light and neat.“

Manchester Despatch
The new Rover 6 h.p. two-seated car is a marvel of valuie and good workmanship. ... it should command a big sale.“

Birmingham Post
A serviceable-looking roomy vehicle, strong, well made, and very convenient car. Will probably become popular.“

Sheffield Telegraph
„The Rover Company have a 100 guinea car on very graceful lines, carrying two persons, and apparently the acme of simplicity in its machinery.“

The People
„This car should certainly be seen by those who are looking out for an inexpensive machine.“

Notts Express
„The workmanship throughout is excellent, and a big business is sure to be done with it during th coming season.“

Lincolshire Echo
„The Rover Company has introduced a full-fledged motor car with three forward speeds and reverse, at 100 guineas. With such a firm we may know it will be a good one ... their reputation is very high.“
