The sportier MG "ZR" developed from the ROVER model series "25" are offered from 2001. - The illustration shows a two-door "ZR", model year 2002.
MG's "Z" series represents the sporty side of the respective Rover models. The "ZR", which is initially only offered as a 3-door model, is primarily intended to appeal to young buyers who find the underlying Rover "25" too conservative. And MG-Rover is successful with this marketing strategy. In 2004, the "ZR" produced the highest sales figures of all models.
But the origins of the model range go back to the time before Rover was taken over by BMW. At that time, it was planned to crown the Rover "200" series with a GTi model. But BMW did not like this "Hot Hatch" model - and it disappeared into oblivion.
Only under MG-Rover did the project revive as the "X30", now based on the Rover "25".
The "ZR" was built in Longbridge from 2001. The following models were available, differing in engine and equipment:
Petrol Models
• ZR 105 - 1.4 16V 4-cylinder in-line engine, 101 hp / 75 kW, torque 123 Nm, 0-100 kmh / 0-62 mph in 10.0 sec., top speed 178 kmh / 110 mph
• ZR 120 - 1.8 16V 4-cylinder in-line engine, 115 hp / 85 kW, torque 160 Nm, 0-100 kmh / 0-62 mph 8,6 sec., top speed 191 kmh / 118 mph
• ZR 160 - 1.8 16V VVC 4-cylinder in-line engine, 157 hp / 118 kW, torque 174 Nm, 0-100 kmh / 0-62 mph 7,4 sec., top speed 212 kmh / 131 mph
Diesel Models
• ZR 100 - 2.0 4-cylinder Turbodiesel in-line engine, 101 PS / 74 kW, torque 240 Nm, 0-100 kmh / 0-62 mph 9,7 sec., top speed 183 kmh / 113 mph
• ZR 115 - 2.0 4-cylinder Turbodiesel in-line engine, 113 PS / 83 kW, torque 260 Nm, 0-100 kmh / 0-62 mph 9,1 sec., top speed 187 kmh / 116 mph
In 2003, the model range is supplemented by the MG "Express", a fast, two-seater van with a reinforced load compartment floor and partition bulkhead to the passenger compartment. The rear side windows are omitted - this is also for tax reasons.
From this model year onwards, all models are also available as 5-door models.
In August 2004, the version redesigned on the outside and inside by Peter Stevens, who also designed the McLaren F1, is offered. In addition to a modified wishbone rear suspension, it features new front and rear bumpers, new headlights, a reshaped tailgate and other details. Inside, new upholstery materials, a new dashboard and redesigned door inserts refresh the models.
In Germany, only the 3-door "ZR 160" with side sills, 17" alloy wheels, sports suspension, sports exhaust system, partial leather seats and large roof spoiler will be offered initially. Later, the more economically equipped "ZR 105" with 16" alloy wheels and rear drum brakes is added. All other engine versions are not offered.
After the "facelift" in August 2004, both the 3-door and the 5-door MG "ZR" were completely renewed.
